DOS 6.2 UPDATE
by Steven Woas
On November 1, 1993 Microsoft released MS-DOS 6.2. The
work below was produced as a supplement to my book,
Learning DOS for the Complete Novice, 2nd Edition, 336
pages, published by Celestial Press. This work titled
DOS 6.2 UPDATE is being offered as shareware.
Shareware is a method of marketing software for the
program's author. Shareware programs are copyrighted.
The manuals for these programs are usually found on the
disk in the form of a text file. You can obtain these
programs for trial use from shareware distributors for a
copying fee of just a few dollars per disk. Other
sources for shareware are online services, BBSs, and
friends. Shareware programs require a separate payment
to the author if found useful. With shareware, you get to
"Try before you buy."

The main reason Microsoft released DOS 6.2 was to correct
potential problems with their DOS 6.0 compression program
called DoubleSpace. However, there are some other nice
features in DOS 6.2. The reason Microsoft did not call
their new operating system DOS 6.1 is that IBM released
a version of DOS called PC-DOS 6.1.
Microsoft has two versions of DOS 6.2. If you are
already running DOS 6.0 they have an upgrade product that
they call MS-DOS 6.2 Step-Up. This can be found in
computer stores for around $10.00. You can also download
MS-DOS 6.2 Step-Up for FREE from a Microsoft BBS. See
the next section for details.
For those who are using an earlier version of DOS,
Microsoft has the full MS-DOS 6.2 Upgrade product. The
MS-DOS 6.2 Upgrade must be purchased. If you shop, you
can find it for around $45.00.
